Marie Churchill

A New York society woman and the belle of the Newport summer mansions, Marie Churchill in the final years of the 19th century was generally conceded to be Gotham's greatest beauty. Appearing in venues such as the Bradley-Martin Charity Ball, dressed in gowns sometimes given by costumers in order to establish the designer's reputation, Marie Churchill reigned as the belle supreme. In 1898 she married Harold Baring of the great English banking family in one of the great society weddings of the Gilded Age. She left with her husband to England, lived a life of gentility, only emerging in the news during World War I when she joined in the band of aristocratic women who ferreted out German spies in England.
